Environmental Education
Reaching Policy Makers and Local Communities
OTS developed the Decision Makers Course for professional policymakers who devise and implement policies that affect tropical resources but who often have minimal training in environmental sciences in order to enhance their understanding of environmental issues. A campaign to endow the U.S. Decision Makers course is currently underway. For more information, contact the OTS Development office.
Due to the success of the current Decision Makers courses, the OTS Environmental Policy Program is planning a new course to target Central American corporate leaders to enhance their understanding of environmental issues. The course is funded by the Tinker Foundation through a grant that covers the costs of planning the courses and undertaking two initial offerings.

Interdependence: Economic Development and Environmental concerns in Tropical Countries
The U.S. Decision Makers Course (97-8), took place February 16-23 with 20 participants. Participants included staff from the Executive Office of the President and from other parts of the Executive Branch, personal staff of Congress people, members of congressional committees, and representatives from non-governmental organizations. Dr. Jorge Jiménez (OTS), Lic. Olga Corrales (World Bank) and Dr. Alex Moad (USDA Forest Service) led the course to Palo Verde Biological Station, Playa Grande, La Fortuna and La Selva Biological Station. Participant feedback proved this course to be highly successful, not only by providing the participants a broader understanding on tropical forest ecology, climate change, community involvement in environmental issues, sustainable development, and other issues, but also by relating these issues to specific responsibilities in participants’ jobs. Many thanks to the W. Alton Jones Foundation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation for support of this course.
