Karen Vickers. M. Sc, University of Cape Town
Karen Vickers is currently a resident lecturer on the OTS South Africa Program. She is responsible for managing the conservation management course as well as the statistics course on the program. Her main interests are in the field of Conservation Biology and range from understanding biodiversity patterns and processes, to understanding how to effectively communicate scientific issues on the ground in order to improve the implementation of conservation action. During her time with the OTS program she has been involved in research relating to elephant impacts on biodiversity within the Kruger National Park.
Karen has had research experience in a number of conservation related fields including: animal welfare, sustainable forestry practices, and the breeding and nesting behaviour of threatened seabirds. Most recently her research interests lie in the field of Conservation Planning. Her Master’s research focused on assessing a protected area network in Mpumalanga South Africa in order to determine whether the province’s main conservation agency was aligning resource allocation with biodiversity objectives. She is interested in the theory and process of setting realistic targets for biodiversity conservation.
